In most cases, if you’re wondering whether or not your shower needs to be re-caulked, the answer is usually, “yes”. While you may notice that seems to be only slight discoloration and a tiny speck missing or peeling off your shower wall, neither of those is a good sign. The primary purpose of your shower’s caulk is to protect your wall behind your shower from tile water damage. Tile water damage repair can be very expensive, so why not be proactive and ensure that your tile’s caulk is watertight? The Grout Medic of Central New Jersey offers all new customers a 100% free consultation. You can reach us anytime by calling us at 732-876-9835.
Do I need to remove the old caulk before putting down new caulk?
We get this question all of the time. In most cases, we’d recommend removing old caulk to allow for an even and clean appearance. For example, if your caulk all around your shower is even slightly discolored, it won’t match exactly with the new caulk that’s being applied. Furthermore, wouldn’t it be nice to have peace of mind in knowing that all of your shower’s caulking is properly adhered to and brand new? We’ll make sure to at least remove all of the old, bad caulk before applying any new beads. The reason for this is simple – failure to remove the old, bad caulk will not allow us to put down a new bead of caulk that’s doing its job.
So, in short, we do recommend at least removing all of the old, dirty, discolored, bad caulk before applying new caulk. Again, your end goal is two-fold; you want to ensure that your shower’s caulking looks great, but more importantly that it is keeping water from seeping into your wall. It’s as much about practicality as it is about aesthetics. Again, it’s much less expensive to have your shower re-caulked than it is to have a tile water damage repair project on your hands.
So, if your shower is looking a little worse for wear and you’re considering whether or not it needs to be re-caulked, why not get a professional’s opinion? Additionally, make sure to meet with multiple tile and grout companies, as this will allow you to obtain a quote or estimate from each company. We’ll be the first to admit, we aren’t going to be your cheapest option; but, we’ll more than make up for it in quality. So, if you’d like to know how to tell if your shower needs to be re-caulked, call The Grout Medic of Central New Jersey today at 732-876-9835 or fill out our contact form anytime. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
